What is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information as a pattern of black squares on a white grid. Unlike traditional barcodes that encode data in one dimension (left to right), QR codes encode data in two dimensions (horizontal and vertical), allowing them to store significantly more information — up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters. QR codes can be scanned by smartphone cameras and dedicated QR readers.

QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction, which allows the code to be read even if partially damaged or obscured. There are four error correction levels: L (7% recovery), M (15% recovery), Q (25% recovery), and H (30% recovery).
